Seeds
What are Heirloom Seeds, Open-Pollinated Seeds, Hybrid Seeds?
The differentiation came from Seed Saver Exchange:
An heirloom variety is a plant variety that has a history of being passed down within a family or community, similar to the generational sharing of heirloom jewelry or furniture. An heirloom variety must be open-pollinated, but not all open-pollinated plants are heirlooms.
Open-pollination is when pollination occurs by insect, bird, wind, humans, or other natural mechanisms.
Hybridization is a controlled method of pollination in which the pollen of two different species or varieties is crossed by human intervention.
Why save open-pollinated seeds from your garden?
We started saving seeds from our garden in 2013, when we started our home garden. It was my husband’s idea to save seeds so we don’t have to keep on buying seeds. Also we would ask for seeds of existing plants in our neighborhood.
Here are 6 reasons why we should save our seeds, as cited by the Seed Savers Exchange, the biggest non-profit for seed savers:
- Save Money
- Preserve Genetic Diversity
- Flavor
- Connect With Your Garden
- Help Save The Bees
- Build Community
