Philippine Cinnamon Aromatic Water

Hydrosol of Native Cinnamomum spp. — Bark & Leaf

What Is It?

Philippine Cinnamon Aromatic Water is a hydrosol — a pure, water-based aromatic distillate produced as a co-product of steam distillation during essential oil extraction. As steam passes through a blend of wild-harvested Philippine cinnamon bark and leaves, it carries volatile aromatic molecules with it. When this steam condenses, it yields two products: the essential oil and the aromatic water below it. Nothing is added. Nothing is removed.  Aromatic water is also known as Essential water.

The result is a gentle, water-soluble fraction of Philippine cinnamon — retaining the plant’s signature warmth and bioactive compounds in a form that is mild enough for direct skin contact, inhalation, and topical use.

The Plant: A Botanical Heritage Unique to the Philippines

Philippine cinnamon — locally known as Kalingag (Luzon), Kaningag (Visayas), or Karingag (Mindanao) — encompasses several Cinnamomum species endemic or native to the Philippine archipelago. Unlike the commercially dominant Ceylon cinnamon (C. verum) or Cassia (C. cassia), Philippine species such as Cinnamomum mercadoi S. Vidal are biologically distinct, characterized by a notably different essential oil profile.

Where most cinnamon species are dominated by cinnamaldehyde, Philippine cinnamon bark essential oil is rich in safrole and eugenol, giving it a complex, deeper, more resinous aromatic character. The leaves contribute their own volatile compounds, creating a full-spectrum hydrosol that reflects the whole plant rather than a single part.

Cinnamomum mercadoi is indigenous to Philippine forests, growing from low altitudes up to 2,000 metres, from Luzon to Mindanao. Our aromatic water is sourced from wild-harvested bark and leaves — collected from forests where these trees grow naturally, without cultivation or chemical intervention.  Other species that may be included in the distillation are Cinnamomum iners, Cinnamomum nanophyllum, Cinnamomum ebaloi, Cinnamomum mendozai , Cinnamomum myrrianthum, and Cinnamomum rupestre.

How It Is Made

This aromatic water is a true steam distillation hydrosol, produced as a direct byproduct of Philippine cinnamon essential oil distillation. During distillation, steam is passed through the plant material — a blend of bark and leaf — and the resulting vapor carries water-soluble aromatic molecules. Upon cooling, this condensate separates naturally: the essential oil floats above, and the aromatic water settles below.

Unlike infusions or macerated waters, this process does not require solvents, alcohol, or chemical extraction. The hydrosol is collected as-is — free of additives, preservatives, and alcohol — making it one of the most minimally processed aromatic preparations available.

Therapeutic & Wellness Applications

The bioactive compounds present in Philippine cinnamon — including eugenol, safrole derivatives, terpinene-4-ol, flavonoids, and tannins — contribute to the hydrosol’s documented and traditionally recognized properties:

Antimicrobial Activity Research on C. mercadoi essential oil has demonstrated moderate to notable antimicrobial activity against E. coli, B. subtilis, and C. tropicalis (Candida). The hydrosol, while gentler in concentration, carries these properties in a diluted, water-soluble form suitable for surface and skin application.

Antioxidant Support Cinnamon species are widely recognized for their polyphenol content — including flavonoids and tannins identified in Philippine cinnamon extracts. These compounds are associated with antioxidant activity, helping to neutralize free radicals at the cellular level.

Warmth & Grounding Aromatherapy The aromatic profile of Philippine cinnamon hydrosol is warm, spicy, and slightly woody — distinctly different from commercial cinnamon owing to its safrole and eugenol character. Inhalation or diffusion of the aromatic water is used to promote mental focus, emotional grounding, and a sense of calm resilience. It is particularly suited to stress-recovery rituals and meditative practices.

Comfort for Irritated or Sensitized Skin Anecdotal use among Philippine cinnamon advocates has noted the hydrosol’s soothing effect on dry, itchy, and environmentally stressed skin — including skin sensitized by external exposures like sun and wind. The mildness of a hydrosol versus an undiluted essential oil makes it accessible for individuals with reactive skin.

Skin & Beauty Applications

Philippine Cinnamon Aromatic Water is formulated for multi-modal skin use:

As a Facial Mist or Toner Apply 2–3 spritzes to freshly cleansed skin as a pre-serum prep step. The hydrosol’s astringent and antioxidant properties help tighten the appearance of pores, balance surface oils, and create a receptive base for moisturizers or serums. Suitable for combination and oily skin types. Patch testing is recommended for sensitive skin before regular use.

As a Body Mist Mist onto the body after bathing or during the day for a warming, aromatic lift. The natural eugenol content provides a mild sensory warmth on contact, making it particularly grounding in cooler conditions.

As a Compress Saturate a clean cloth with the aromatic water and apply as a warm or cool compress to areas of tension, fatigue, or localized discomfort. The aromatic vapors support relaxation while the plant compounds work topically.

For Inhalation & Diffuser Use Add directly to a diffuser in place of water, or inhale from a cloth for a focused aromatic experience. The hydrosol’s volatile molecules remain active in mist form, supporting respiratory comfort and mental clarity during inhalation.

Sustainability & Sourcing

Philippine cinnamon has historically faced pressure from over-harvesting and habitat loss. Our aromatic water is produced from wild-harvested, sustainably sourced plant material from trees planted by partner smallholder farmers — collected with practices that protect native forest populations and support the communities and farmers who steward these trees.

No synthetic inputs are used at any stage. The product contains no additives and no alcohol — only the pure aromatic water captured during distillation.
